ADVANCES TO SETTLERS.

OVER .£500,000 APPLIED FOE. Tho first meeting of the General Lending Board under the Government Advances to Settlers Act was put off from yesterday until to-day. . If the Solicitor-General is present the only member of tho board absent will he the Surveyor-General, who has gone to Auckland. Over 600 applications are now recorded, and the aggregate amount of advances applied for is upwards of half a million sterling. The stated value of tho security offered is fully three-fold that of the amount for which application is made. The business at to-day’s' sitting will be to appoint local valuers and to order valuations in those cases which the superintendent has marked for favourable consideration. As soon as the valuations begin to come in the Board will sit to deal with tho applications.- It is expected that the valuations of the securities offered by applicants in this district will bo to hand within about ten days, but throe weeks will probably elapse before the valuations from the remoter districts can be expected to arrive.
