BANKRUPTCY.

David G. Whitaker, confectioner, Cuba street, who has been adjudged a bankrupt, in his statement to tho Assignee says that about five years ago he began business as a confectioner with a . sum of .£6O and a small plant. Owing to illness he was. unable to attend to hifi business for a period of over two years. Ho went to Christchurch eight times during his illness, his doctor having advised him to go there for the benefit of his health. In consequence of his absence ho • had to employ labour to carry < on tho business, and the profits fell away; considerably. Ho had never been able ito got tho trade back. During those two years his wife and three children were unwell, and one child died. He paid largo sums of money to doctors during tho period. Owing to the dulnoss of trade and pressure by his creditors he had been compelled to seek tho protection of the Court. The liabilities amount to 1 £371 3s 6d, and tho assets are estimated at .£79, and consist of stock-in-trade valued at £sl Os lOd; book debts, £5 7s Od j furniture, £l4; and surplus from securities in hands of secured creditors, £8 17s. Tho principal creditors are—Phoenix Insurance Company, £5 3s Id; Bigg and Whittaker, £l4 16s7d; A. Hawker, £23 15s j W. and G. Turnbull and Co., £72 Hs; Phcenix Confectionery Company, Dunedin, £57 Os lid; McPherson, Kemp and Co., Dunedin, £72 11s j Berry and Co., Christchurch,; £22 j Wellington Biscuit Company, £7 18s 2d; Gridin and Co., £46 j Hudson and Co., £7 15s ; and Kempthorne, Prosser and Co., £6,65. The secured creditors are Whittaker Bros., who hold security valued at £37 17s for a debt of £29. The creditors meet at 11 a.m. on Friday next..
