THE LADY MAYOR.

By Tolegraph.r-Press' Association. Aucki.and, May 22.

An unexpected development has taken place at Onehunga. Last night was the date for the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council. Two councillors and a big crowd, including many visitors from Auckland, put in an appearance, expecting a night’s fun. Half an hour passed, the lady Mayor and her supporters being conspicuous only by their absence. A councillor then arrived, and stated that ho had met Mrs Yates in the street, and she hud told him there would be no meeting of the Council that night. The disappointed audience then dispersed. Captain Yates, Mrs Yates’ husband, says the reason for the unexpected postponement of the meeting was that Mrs Yates had heard that a number of strangers were, going out from Auckland to , attend the. meeting, and that she, having another engagement, and being desirous of upholding the dignity of Onehunga, had gone to town.

Mrs Yates, in a letter to the Auckland Star, very properly says the police should have cleared the room and prevented the disgraceful disturbance which took place at the Council meeting on Monday week. In the absence of the police or any other men of spirit, Mrs Yates, it will be remembered, had to turn the crowd out herself. The lady Mayor writes thus with reference to the overcrowding now common at every Borough Council meeting: " Fancy upwards of 200 people in a room about 22ft x 18ft, a high two-story (building, only one way of exit, with no fire escape appliances. What if a fire had taken place—l will leave you to imagine what would have been the result.”
