QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY.

THE VOLUNTEER MANOEUVRES.

We are indebted to the courtesy of Lieut.-Colonel Newall for the following official sketch of the Volunteer manoeuvres which will take place on the Queen’s Birthday :An enemy effects a landing at Ohariu Bay during night of the 23rd, and is reported as approaching Makara at sunrise on the 24th. Object, an advance ofi Wellington via Karori. Strength, half Of’ B Battery, with two guns, half of Horotaunga Mounted Rifles escorting same, and tjto companies Wellington and Potono IJaval Artillery. A force iV detached ffoip Wellington to intercept his advance, and proceeds to Upland Farm, westward of Roman Catholic Cemetery, Occupying thO heights dominating the city and commanding the roads leading into it by Tinakori road and Mitchelltown. Strength: Half of the D Battery with two. guns, half of Heretaunga Mounted Elfles escorting same, and two companies Wellington City Rifles and Wellington Guards, the Permanent Militia following as a reserve. Commanding officer, Lieut. - Commander Duncan. The attacking force will be under Lieut.Commander Duncan, and will have reached point where the Tinakori road and new. Cemetery road meet by 10.15 a.m., and where its further advance may be expected to be checked by the outposts of the defenders. The commanding officer of the defending force will be Captain Collins. The main body of the defending force will by 10.15 be in possession of the heights, its advanced guard now forming an outpost well to the front in the direction of the junction already mentioned to command both roads, but it may be expected to bo driven back fighting, though delaying the advance of the attack. The field of operations (about 120 acres), while too limited to admit of much in the way of strategy, is nevertheless well adapted for the exercise of tactical skill on the part of leaders and individual intelligence by the rank, and file, owing to the many folds of the ground. Both the attacking and defending forces are restricted to the area ofthe farm, which is bounded on the east by the Town Bolt, on the north by the southern fence of the Botanical Gardens, on the west by the Tinakori road to its junction, and thence on the south by the new Cemetery road to Mitchelltown, both of these roads being, however, available.

Additional district orders concerning the Volunteer manoeuvres on Queen’s Birthday appear in our advertisement columns.
