COUNTRY NEWS.

(IROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Palmerston North, April 22.

The complimentary concert given to Mr F. Clemens last evening was a fully earned and well-merited recognition of over two years’ hard work in the forming and training of the Fire Brigade Band, whose performance in the two or three items of the programme, which they rendered, bore ample testimony to the capability of and care bestowed by their Leader. The programme was a lengthy one, and so many encores were demanded that I dare not attempt a de. tailed report, suffice it to say that the performers throughout the evening were thoroughly appreciated. The following, who are all favourably known in mnsicle circles, contributed to the evening’s enjoymonnt, viz.. Misses Cherritt, Leary, Mowlem, and Nellie Anderson Bowes, the last named a visitor to Palmerston, who won golden opinions on this her first appearance, and Messrs Norberg, Isherwood, G. acd G. W. Kendal), Frankol, and Montague, all of whom sustained their reputations, whether as vocalists or instrumentalists, so well earned in the past. Mr Drew acted as conductor of the instrumental part of the programme, and Air Haybittlo contributed two excellent recitations.

At 1.15 this morning theta was another alarm of fire, the bell ringing furiously for some minutes. It was quickly discovered that there was a very small outbreak in a cottage in Taouui street, occupied by Mr Snow, which the members of the brigade, who (as is ever the case when their services are required) were at once on the spot, subdued before sny appreciable damage, beyond that caused by water, was done.
