The match between Mr Vernon’s English eleven and a Combined Australian team was commenced to-day. The ground was in good condition. There was a large attendance of spectators. The visitors went first to the wickets, and succeeded in totting up 292 before being disposed of. The bowling of the Combined team was excellent, and H. The Park, who had a lead of 64 on the first innings, have lost 4 wickets for 27 in the second. The Midland No. 1 made 282 against Lancaster Park No, 2 (15). Wheatley, o and b Cooke, 114, and Buchanan, b Digby, 66, were chief scorers. These were the only cup matches played, and they will be finished during next week.

A match took place on Saturday on the Basin Reserve between a mixed second and third team from the Midland Cricket Club, and a first and second team from the Rival Cricket Club, and resulted in a win for the former by 23 runs on the first innings. Scores —Midland, 88; Rival, 65. Penney (25), Wilson (20), and Aitken (17) were the principal scorers for the Midland Cricket Club. For the Rivals, Cole was top with 18, Fisher (16) and Bishop (9) were the most successful batsmen. G. Easton bowled three for 18, Aitken three for 21, A. Easton one for 6, Gormley onefor6, Richardson one for 3. For the winners G. Easton (captain) took 3 wickets for 18 ; Aitken, 3 for 21 ; A. Easton and Gormley, each took 1 for 6 ; and Richardson, 1 for 3. For the Rivals, H. Parsons, 4 for 24; and Colo (captain), 3 for 17, were the most successful bowlers. All members of the Midland Club are requested to attend practice regularly during this week in view of the Cup matches in which the Club is engaged next Saturday. A match was played at Palmerston North yesterday between the Poneke and Palmerston Clubs. The former won on the first innings by 32 runs. The scores were— Poneke (first innings) 50 ; Palmerston, IS. Wiren carried out his bat for a carefullyplayed 16. The only other double-figure scorer was Nicholls (12). The bowling of Moorhouse and Kirker was too much for the country team.
