THE EDUCATION SYSTEM.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, —In all the discussions as to the coat of education nothing has been said as to the efficiency of the system. I have', by accident, had an opportunity of hearing some of our youths read aloud, with the result that I found they could not read correctly. If they came to a long word they mispronounced it, and did not understand its meaning. I hope this is not the case generally. In arithmetic they seemed to be pretty good, but the very basis of learning is a correct knowledge of the vulgar tongue, and without being well grounded in this no subsequent advance cau be expected. As a contrast I may mention the instruction in drawing at the School of Design, where tbe pupils are well grounded from the beginning.—lam, &c.,
