In fhe House of Commons to day, Sir Henry Holland, Secretary of State for the Colonies, replying to a question, stated that British sovereignty would be proclaimed over the territory in New Guinea,! now under a protectorate, as soon as the New Guinea Bill proposed by Queensland and adopted by the Conference held in London this year, had passed the colonial Legislatures. Sir Henry Holland further stated that the questions relating to pioneer settlers and the trade of New ; Guinea ■would be reserved until the aovereignty had been proclaimed, when they would be referred to the Administrator. In answer to another question, the Secretary of State for the Colonies said that the sanction of the House of Commons to a contribution for the Australasian naval force was not necessary, but he deprecated the refusal of any such vote, as it would surprise and dissatisfy the colonies. Mr Gladstone has written a letter, in which he states that the election of Mr Brunner for the - Northwich Division of Cheshire is evidence that the "English people intend to concede Home Buie to Ireland. It is reported that Bismarck has stated that Germany will leave Russia unfettered in dealing with the Bulgarian question, Austria in dealing with Servia, and England in settling the Egyptian question. The Antwerp wool sales opened yesterday. Good quality River Plate wools declined 5 centimes and inferior .aorta 10 centimes. Australian wools will be offered to-morrow. ® The wheat market is quiet. New Zealand off coast cargoes have been sold at 29s 9d.
The rains which have fallen have improved the hop crops.
