THE ELECTIONS.
(from: our own correspondent.) Masterton, August 18. Election matters are quieting down here, and very few additions are being made to the roil. It is believed that when the supplementary roll is completed it will not contain more than 2300. It is rumored that Mr Hawkins’ candidature is strengthening the chances of Mr Hogg very considerably, and that the former gentleman will only poll a small number of voces. As both Mr Beetham aud Mr Hawkins are avowed Freetraders, the electors cannot understand why the minority does not give place to the majority, and thus throw their whole weight on the side of Mr Beetham, and make hia election doubly sure, Mr Hogg’s committee regard their candidate's return as certain.
