THE ELECTIONS.

(from: our own correspondent.) Masterton, August 18. Election matters are quieting down here, and very few additions are being made to the roil. It is believed that when the supplementary roll is completed it will not contain more than 2300. It is rumored that Mr Hawkins’ candidature is strengthening the chances of Mr Hogg very considerably, and that the former gentleman will only poll a small number of voces. As both Mr Beetham aud Mr Hawkins are avowed Freetraders, the electors cannot understand why the minority does not give place to the majority, and thus throw their whole weight on the side of Mr Beetham, and make hia election doubly sure, Mr Hogg’s committee regard their candidate's return as certain. Mr R. S, Hawkins met the electors of the Masterton district last evening, at the Public Hall, Kuripuni. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Christchurch, August 18. Mr Henry Thompson, Opposition candidate for Christchurch South, spoke to-night, receiving a vote of thanks. He said he could pot support the Stout-Vogel Government, because they could not agree amomg themselves, but ho would not support Major Atkinson. Auckland, August 18. The following were nominated for the Northern Maori Electoral District: —Wi Katene, E. Whererau, Timoti, Pnhopi, Pemare Kingi, Eapi, and Hirini Taiwhanga. Masterton, August 18. : Mr R. i 3. Hawkins addressed the electors at Knrupuni last night on the land question, agreeing with Mr Ballance’a scheme in the main, but objecting to State aid. Christchurch, August 18, , The following candidates have been nominated for the Southern Maori district Raniera Erihana, Tare Wetera, Tekahu, Tare Tika, Toma Parata. Alexandra, August 18. The following condidates have been nominated for the Western Maori district:— Hoane Taipoa, Pepeni Eketone, Te Wheoro, Takarangi Mete Kingi, and Hone Oraipi. The show of hands waf in favor of Te Wheoro. A poll was demanded.
