A SCANDALOUS AFFAIR.

(UNITED press ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, February 10. At the Police Court to-day, Isaac Duane was charged with permitting the body of a child to be buried in the Presbyterian cemetery, Symonds - street, after the cemetery was closed by authority of the Governor, The evidence showed that Duane is a Roman Catholic, and has children buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery in Symonds-street. The child in question was still-born. Duane applied to have the family grave opened, but the gravedigger refused to do so without an order from Clifton. Mrs Duane’s father, the late Mr Maohilli, is buried in the Presbyterian cemetery, and Duane applied to Sims to have the child buried in hia grave. He gave an order, but the assistant gravedigger did not know which was the grave. When Duane arrived at the grave with the body he pointed out a grave, which was opened, and the interment was made. It transpires now that the grave opened was not Machilli’a at all. The gravedigger, Brace, asserted that Duane pointed to it and said there were two children'buried there, meaning his. This was denied by Duane. The Bench considered the cemetery authorities very much to blame in giving orders, and fined defendant 20a and costs.
