Jenneaa* shop recently. Mr E. Shaw appeared for the defence. Inspector Goodall asked for a remand for eight days, as the police were' not prepared to go on with the case at present, A watoh stolen from Mr Jenness’ premises bad been found upon the person of the prisoner, who bad purchased it for £l, tbe real value of the piece being £lO 10s ; so that the natural inference was that Davis.knew the watch was a stolen one. Mr Shaw said eight days was a long while to keep a man in custody who might be innocent, and as the person from whom Davis obtained the watch was now in custody at Christchurch, he suggested that the police should take a shorter remand, as the other prisoner would be here iu a day or two. Inspector Goodall said the police would not tie ready for some days to proceed against the other prisoner, and he would prefer calling evidence now ' and asking for a remand for eight days upon that evidence to remanding the case for a day or two. , Subsequently, at tbe suggestion of the Bench, Inspector Goodall took a remand'till Thursday. Bail was allowed, accused iu bis own recognisance of £IOO, and two sureties of £SO each, 1
