WOODVILLE.

(FROJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) This ha* not been a very stirring week here, things having been rather dull. The principal event has been the inspection, for the first time, of the Volunteer corps by Captain Garner, of Napier. Although nothing was known of the matter till the Tuesday, still on the Thursday evening there was a capital muster,4Boutofsomenbeingpresent. One man left his work ten miles off to be present ; several others some miles off in the bush only heard of it two hours before the time of parade, and rode hard to be at the muster. It seems unfair that officers should give men so little chance, especially in matters on which the capitation to a very great extent depends. I understand that Captain Garner expressed himself as highly pleased with the muster, being surprised to find such a strong corps in Woodville. Both the local Special Settlement Associations have received specifications for the survey of their blocks from the Government, and consequently may be expected to soon call for tenders for the surveys. A good many will be glad of this, as it will be a sign of action, it having almost seemed as if they had gone asleep. The Methodists are going to hold their gift auction to-night, aud are busy getting matters arranged for it. We have a very fine though very small Roman Catholic Church here, which has been finished for some months now, but is not yet consecrated. People hero are very well pleased at the contract for the section of line from Tahoraito to near Woodville having been let. The railway station has been fixed after all in the swamp on the Mastertonroad.
