FORGED BANK NOTES IN CANTERBURY.

Christchurch, November 14. Forged Bank of New Zealand £1 notes are in circulation here. They are about a quarter of an loch shorter than the genuine notes, and are printed on hand-made paper not so soft as that of the good notes, and the printing is fainter. They have a general wash* d out appearance, and purport to be issued at Cbriutchurch on April 1, 1834. They aro signed. “J. Hay Barclay, manager/ 1 The words <l one pound ’’ are printed in green on the back as on the genuine, but the appearance of the printing is very different. They were circulated on the racecourse, and were detected by eight of them being paid into the account of Mr Burke, a publican, who had a booth on the course, and who bad been deceived by them. Six more were seized by the police on the course to-day, and others have been found. Three persons were detained by the police on the course, but all proved that they had been taken in themselves.
