HELPLESS CONDITION OF NATIVES

The Vanua Levu c of the Fiji Times says “ The peop’e are dying out in these parts very rapidly. During the last year, in the one town of Wamu, between 90 and 100 souls have passed away. Of the few children the greater portion die. The people die for want of nourishment, China bananas being the only food in the district. The natives will not plant, as they cannot ensure themselves the remit of their labour* : the S»U comes in and robs at will. The systems of the people have no resisting power against disease, and the mildest form of sickness carries them off. Added to this Is the want of any atimnlus to exertion. Hope even has abandoned them ; they simply He down and die/'
