ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL.

ANNUAL MEETING OF PARXSHONERS.

The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. Paul’s Church, Thorndon, Was held last evening at the Chiirchfoom in the Tinakoriroad. The chair was taken by the incumbent, the Yen. Archdeacon Thorpe. In submitting the annual report and balancesheet, the Chairman referred to tho increasing work of the parish, and the consequent mental and physical strain attendant thereon, jxs being the cause which necessitated his relinquishing his ministerial duties in the parish. The rev* Chairman alluded with thankfulness to the fact that during the past year the number of communicants and the members of the congregation had considerably increased, as also the number of strangers who Sunday after Sunday visited the church en route for other ports. The Chairman stated that the Bishop of Nelson had recently held a confirmation service at which thirty-four candidates had presented themselves. The report, which was taken as read, expressed regret at the resignation of the present incumbent* and recorded cordial appreciation of the work done by him during his incumbency. It alluded to the recent interior painting and redecorations of the church, which, in a great measure, were due to the personal exertions of Messrs Barraud and Pennefather, and acknowledged a gift of a stained glass-window by Mrs Levin, senr., and Mr Barraud. The debt was reduced to L4OO. After referring to the recommendation of the vestry to recommend to the Bishop the appointment of a citrate at a salary of L2OO per annum, it concluded by referring to the successful establishment of a Kindergarten School in the churchroom. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts from all sources amounted to Llsßl 3s 7d, leaving a credit balance of L2O 9s Bd.

Mr D. Anderson, junr., moved the adoption of the report, which -was seconded, by Mr Roscroe, and carried. Mr E. B. Brown moved the following resolution: —“That, inasmuch as it is highly desirable that the services of an assistant curate should be obtained, the bishop be requested to make the appointment, and the Diocesan Synod be memoralised to place a stipend of L2OO for such assistant curate upon the annual schedule of appropriations, the parish guaranteeing to pay the said amount to the General Church Fund.” Mr O. E. Powles seconded the motion, which was adopted. The Chairman, in answer to questions, said that the proposed stipend would come out of the offertories. He saw no reason to doubt that the revenue of the Church would, should the synod agree to the proposition, be quite sufficient to meet the requirements. A hearty vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr Richardson, seconded by Mr Stains, was accorded to Mrs Levin, senr., and Messrs Barraud and Pennefather, for their exertions in decorating the school. The Ohairmain. said that Mr Wilson had agreed to continue the office of minister’s churchwarden during the term of his ministry. Mr D. Anderson, junr., was again unanimously appointed parishioners* churchwarden. The election of the vestry resulted as follows :—Messrs H. S. McKeUar, E. D. Barraud, Captain Hume, Messrs L. Stone, F, W. Pennefather, C. P. Powles, E. B. Browne, and H. C. Wilson. Auditors —Messrs E. W, Lowe and Richardson. The proceedings closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman.
