FIRES.

Shortly after 1 o’clock this morning, two three-roomed cottages, situated at the upper end of Piric-street, were destroyed by fire. The Manners-street fire-bell rang out an alarm, and the brigade were soon on the spot, but not in time to prevent the cottages being completely gutted. They were the property of Mr vV. Kershaw, of Kilbircie, and were occupied, the one by Mr Hook aud the other by Mr Dimes. The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen of the former’s cottage, aud was first discovered by Mrs Hook, who woke and found the bouse full of smoke. Doth families were in bed at the time. Hook loses the whole cf his furniture, including a piano, while Dimes was only able to save a few articles of furniture. The latter is uninsured. The former had his furniture insured for £7O and the piano fer £25 in the National. Both houses were, we believe, insured. (UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION ) Dunedin, July 8. A fire broke out this evecing in a small cottage which had been on fire on Saturday evening. This time it was completely destroyed. A four-roomed bouse at Fine Hill, owned and occupied by William Johnston, carpenter, waa burned down this afternoon. The bouse waa insured for £260 and the furniture for £SO, in the South British. Wanganui, July 8. A fire occurred to-night in a four-roomed cottage in Dublin-street, the property of Mr Lorenson, and occupied by a man named Breen, a blacksmith. The fir© was confined to the kitchen and parlor, and was speedily got under. The building injured iu the Loudon and Lancashire for £l5O, the furniture £72 in the Fire Insurance Association.
