THE COMET.

The comet appeared to very great advantage ■yesterday morning. It rose at about twenty minutes to four o’clock through a striated -cloud-bank, and for nearly half-an-hour was seen in sections only, but tor all that presented a most imposing spectacle. It certainly is ■increasing in size, and measures, we should 'think, fully ten degrees from head to tip of itail. As it gained in altitude it cleared the -cloud-bank, and was visible in its entirety, the vicious nucleus being particularly striking, as also was the apparent nearness of this strange and fascinating visitor. It really seemed to be only just behind the clouds, and it was difficult to realise the enormous distance separating it from the earth. Its -brilliancy was dimmed, but not much, by the moonlight, and it was not until daylight advanced that it gradually faded to a mere shadow in the sky.
