RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Thursday, September 28. (Before Mr H. S. Wardeii, E.M.)
Wipb Desertion. —John White, a young man, was charged with deserting his wife, Mary Ann White, who asked that he might be compelled to contribute to the support of herself and her infant child, and also that she might have exclusive custody of the child. Mr E. Shaw appeared for the defendant. Mary Ann White deposed that last Tuesday week her husband turned her out of her house, took away her child, and gave the key to the landlord. He did this because she found out his villainy. If she wanted a pennyworth of pins she had to ask him for a penny, and then he growled. Her husband went to a Mrs Murray’s, in Willia-street. Since then he had not contributed to her support, and she had lived on charity. She did not attempt to join him. She had been married a little over two years. Her husband was a sailor. She denied that she had been continually drunk for the lest nine months, and she had never thrown her baby on the floor and smashed the furniture because her husband would not give her brandy. When be turned her out she went to stay with a Mr Cowl, in Maori-row. She knew a young lady named Poll McGregor, who was nursing her baby on one occasion when her husband came in. The case was adjourned until 10 o’clock next morning.
Civil Cases. —I.awrie and Frenandc* v. C. E. Betcher, judgment summons, to recover £2 Is lOd. The defendant did not appear, and an order was made for the payment of the amount; in default, fourteen days’ imprisonment. L. Caches v. ,T. Mulligan, £2, for goods supplied. Judgment was given for the amonnt claimed and coats. Waddle, McLeod, and Weir r. O’Neil, claim £6 13a 7d.' Adjourned until Monday.
