PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

The following report will be presented to the City Council at the usual fortnightly meeting of that body to-morrow evening by the Public Works Committee ;—The Committee beg to report—(l) that they have had under consideration the proposed new contract with Mr R. Niedergesaess, and they recommend that the matter stand over till the permanent levels of the adjoining streets have been fixed ; (2) that the nightsoil contracts with Messrs Kelleher and Daly and Mark Bird expire on the 31st December ; (3) that Mr Jacob Joseph has again applied for leave to erect a protecting wall Ift thick in the right-of-way adjoining his premises, but the Committee cannot recommend that the application be granted. The Committee recommend as follows :—(1) That £lO be paid to Mr J. Monahan in full of all claims for accident to his horse in Hopperstreet ; (2) that the permanent levels In Coromandel-street be fixed as soon as possible ; (3) that under the special circumstances of the case, the penalties incurred by Messrs Kelleher and Daly in their Tinakoriroad drain contract be remitted with the exception of one-half the salary of the overseer of works ; (4) that in future the penalties of all contracts be strictly enforced ; (5) that a drain be laid down in Port and Stafford-streets ; (6) that the application of Messrs Thompson, Shannon, and Co., for a 2-inch water service for fire preventive purposes only, be granted; (7) that a IJ-inoh service for motive power be presented to Messrs Pascoe and Co., subject to stoppage at any time in the event of there being a scarcity of water ; (3) that a special advance of £IOO be made to Mr G. H. Bayliss out of the percentage retained from his Hutt bridge contract, subject to the approval of his sureties; (9) that Messrs Luke, Sons, and Williams have leave to erect a furnace on their premises, subject to the approval of the City Surveyor; (10) that a concrete wall be erected in Mr J. Wilkinsen’a Pirie-street frontage on his paying one-half the contract price; (11) that notice be sent to the Chairmen of the respective Licensing Committees that in future the Council will decline to pay the salary of the clerk ; (12) that accounts amounting to £457 13s 7d be passed for payment, BEFOBT OT DAMAGES BY FLOODS CLAIMS COMMITTEE. The Committee beg to recommend (1) That, under the special circumstances of the cases, the following amounts be paid in full of all claims for damage :—Mr E, D. Johnson, £7 10s ; Mr Robert Daniel, £5 ; Mrs Parker, £3. (2) That no responsibility be acknowledged in the case of damage to the goods belonging to Mr R. S. Corporation in favor of the plaintiff for the sum of £IOOO, and recommend that there be offered to Mr Climie the sum of £4OO, being six months’ salary, to settle the matter, each party to pay their own costs.—Geo. Councillor Newman to move, “ That a Committee be appointed to consider what steps should be taken for the purpose of obtaining a recreation ground at Thorndon.”—Councillor McKenzie to move, “That the obelisk presented by Lady Molesworth to the early settlers of Wellington, for the purpose of being erected as a beacon at Port Nicholson Heads, not having been used for that purpose, and it being no longer required there, in consequence of the erection of the' lighthouse at Penoarrow Head, a request be. made to the Colonial Government to hand it over to the City Council, to be erected in Newtown Park as a drinking fountain ; and that a plate be attached to it, with a suitable inscription engraved thereon, to commemorate the name of Francis Alexander Molesworth as one of the founders of the colony. Councillor McKenzie to move—“ That a Select Committee be appointed for the purpose of investigating the allegations made in regard to the drainage ivotks of the city, with power to call for persons and papers. The Committee to consist of his Worship the Mayor, Councillors Thompson, Maginnity, Miller, A. W. Brown, S. Brown,and the mover; three to form a quorum.” Councillor McKenzie to move—“ That at all meetings of Select Committees, duly convened, the names of members present be entered in the minute book ; and, if a quorum be not present, it be stated that,‘in the absence of a quorum, no meeting was held.’ ”
