RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT

Satuedat, September 23. (Before Maj-iy Edwards, j.P.) Vagrancy. —Richard Wm. Aldridge war charged with being a. vagrant, and with having obtained a forequarter of mutton, valued at 2s 6d, from Elzibeth Richardson by means of false pretences. -The prisoner pleaded not guilty. It appeared from the evidence that on Friiay afternoon the accused went into Mr Richardson’s butcher’s shop in Cuba-street, and, stating that bis name was Oliver, aod that he had previou-ly wo.ked for Mr Kicbardson, prevailed on Miss Richardson to let him have the meat without payment. Accused said he intended to pay for the mutton. .The Magistrate said the circumstances were suspicions, hut he would give the prisoner the benefit of the doubt and dismiss the charge of false pretences. On the charge of vagrancy the prisoner was sent to gaol for a month. A third charge .against him, of extorting money, was struck out, as it rested on the evidence of a child too young to understand the nature of an oath. There was no other business before the Court.
