ENGLISH NEWS.
London, February 13. Another joint note by the Governments of England and France has been issued, further explaining their policy in regard to Egypt. The contents of the document have not, however, yet transpired. Correction previous telegram. Read— Intelligence is to hand from Ireland that an attempt has been made to murder Mr Lloyd, a magistrate at Bodyke, and that during the attack a policeman, who was guarding the house, was shot. No trace of the perpetrators of the outrage have yet been obtained.
February 14. Consols have advanced to 100|-. New Zealand securities are unchanged at the following quotations :—Five per cent. 10 40 loan, 104 J ; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 104 ; 4|- per cent. 1879-1904 loan 99i ex dividend. The market rate of discount has advanced to 5i per cent. Bank rate, (i. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, remains at 55s ; New Zealand ditto, 525. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 41s. Australian tallow—Best beef, 42s per cwt.; best mutton, 48s.
It has transpired that the Anglo-French note explaining the policy of the two Governments, in regard to Egypt, proposes that the European entente cordialc should be directed towards the maintenance of the statu quo in the Khedive’s dominions.
