An influential memorial against the removal of Mr. Lusher, officer in charge of the Auckland telegraph office, was presented to Dr. Lemon this morning by a deputation. He promised to refer the matter to the Telegraph Commissioner. Mr. and Mrs. Lingard, with Dramatic and Operatic Company, arrived this morning from Sydney, under engagement to DeLias. The members of the company, exclusive of the Liugards, are Miss Adell, Miss Teresa Horan, Messrs. Campbell, Craig, Dawson, Owen, Fitz william, Overton, and Hall. Colonel Kenny, M.L.C., died at his residence at Ponsonby this morning without premonition. While dressing he was seized with a fit of apoplexy, and fell heavily to the floor, striking his head against the bed, and inflicting a severe gash. He died almost instantly. got up this morning in his usual health and spirits. Thomas Smith has been charged with a breach of the Customs regulations by evading duty on a gold watch, value £4O. Mr. Brookfield for the Collector of Customs said the watch was sent by Mr. laymens, of Canada. The watch was put in a case of Bibles, and Smith was informed that in a certain Bible, bearing a certain mark, he would find the watch. He was fined £25 with coats. Blenheim, August 17. Ewart’s Hall had a narrow escape f om fire during the performance of the Bellringers last Saturday evening. One of the Lynches on passing off the stage behind the wings accidentally knocked down a largo kerosene lamp, but with great presence of mind he seized some costumes, and throwing them over the lamp, carried it blazing round to the back of the stage, and threw it outside the building, where

it exploded. A fire occurred at Gouland’a Ferry yesterday, whereby the stables and outbuildings belonging to Mrs. Hathaway were totally destroyed. also a quantity of seed wheat and harness which was in the stable. The building was insured, but the loss ia estimated at £IOO, New Plymouth, August 1?. Mr.Kobert Graham and W. I. Marsh Kangeheke, arrived from 'Wellington by steamer yesterday, and left early this morning for Paaihaka, for the purpose of interviewing Te Whiti. It is thought that the two have gone as ambassadors from the Government to offer their services as mediators. They expect to be in time for the monthly meeting, which commences to-day. The Eowena has been moved two lengths. It is anticipated she will be got off to-night. Captain Bendall, from Wellington, is expected here to superintend the launch of the Forest Queen. Tauuaxga, August 17. An exciting race took place to-day between the Waitaki, Union steamer, and the Glenelg, a local boat. The Glenelg started froth Auckland one hour before the Waitaki; and both arrived nearly together at the heads this morning, the Glenelg being a mile ahead, but the Waitaki overtook her before _ reaching the wharf, and beat her by a head. Both steamers were full of tourists for the Bakes. Christchurch, August 17. The Hinemoa arrived with Mr. Ireland’s body to-day, which was sent to Christchurch at once, and ■ forwarded South by the 2.19 train. Ddhedist, August 17. It is said there ia some probability of Mr. Horace Bastings consenting to stand for WaikaiaTimaru, August 17. The remains of the late Mr. Ireland arrived by last train from North this evening,‘and will be forwarded on to Dunedihby early train to-morrow. Napier, August 17. The Poultry Association Show was a great success.. The exhibits were over two hundred, or double last year’s, and the attendance of the public proportionately larger. - There was also a great improvement in the exhibits, a number of birds having been brought from England. Several’prize winners at the Canterbury stow,; which . were ■ purchased and brought here, were not very successful. After the show,*number of exhibits were purchased at the catalogued prices to go; South, and over £7O worth of special prizes were given, besides the association's prizes, 1" ; The Harbor Board to-day decided on a reduction of salaries. , ■ At the Education Board this morning, the question of children übder J j9ge' the schools ’ again cropped up. 'Mt. Bee stated that capitation was being illegally paid for three thousand children under age, which meant a direct annual expenditure of twelve thousand pounds, and indirectly, owing to accommodation - provided, allowances, &c., of another £BOOO. He thought the Board ehould remonstrate with the Minister for Education on this alleged expenditure in the present state of the colonial finances. Mr. Tanner gave notice of motion on the subject for next meeting.
