SUNNYTHORPE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) We have gone through various samples of weather lately. That on Saturday, and Sunday last was terribly cold, and poor cattle in the paddock must have suffered very much. Strange so many farmers in the colony (I mean Dominion) who in many cases are very religious, provide their poor animals no more shelter than a wire fence affords. There are many cases where the farmers have been .on their farms for over 20 years, and yet have planted hardly a shelter tree exoept just around their own residence. Hardly fair to the dumb animalsThe mania for selling out is still going on around here, and our roads and byways are continually being kept lively by the coming and going of stock. Auctioneers and land agents must be amassing enormous fortunes just now. Happy Our local Oddfellows* Lodge bolds a Church parade on Sunday at our Anglican Church. Weather permitting there will no doubt be a large muster. ’ Arbor Day was duly observed here, our school children being busy" with treeplanting on a portion of the school grounds. By the way, the attendance at the school was exceedingly* good last month, being 96 per cent, of the roll number. Considering the time of year this is remarkable, and speaks volumes for the wholo of the persons concerned. Our Christian Endeavour Society is progressing by ■*. leaps and bounds, and its weekly meetings are attended by a considerable number of enthusiastic members. The society has recently become possessed of a magnificent banner,

of beautiful workmanship xn golden letters and crimson plush, with gold fin gens. It was kindly presented to the local branch of the Christian Endeavour by that liberal-minded gentleman, the Ven. Archdeacon Williams, of Hawke s Bay. The banner was manufactured by Mr Robert, of Palmerston North, and is a fine example of his wOi-k. „ I hear h movement is on foot lo entertain Mr and Mrs W. Masters and family before leaving Bunnythorpe for their new home near Hastings. T On Friday evening the annual social in aid of the Public Library funds vas held in our Public Hall, and was, as usual a pronounced success. There was a very large attendance of visitors, who all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The evening’s amusements comprised music, dancing, singing and recitation, besides a variety of competitions. The refreshments were plentiful and of the best, and were supplied by our local confectioner, Mr Malmo. Much of the success of the evening was due to the exertions of Mr H. Spiers, who made ’ a most efficient M.C. "And thus ended one of the very best socials we have had for a long time.
