DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST

Another of Wellington’s old identities has pasaod away. Mr Thomas Bould (see illustrations), who died at Johnsonville on Wednesday, the 15th inst., aged 74, arrived in Wellington in the early part of 1841 in the ship Lord William Bentinek. He left Wellington in 1852 for the Victorian “diggings,”

and had much experience of the early days of Ballarat and Bendigo, and was present during the riots at the former place. Subsequently he returned to New Zealand, and followed the avocation of hotelkeeper until a few years ago, when lie retired from business. In the early days he took an active part in the Volunteer movement, being a member of tho Porirua Rifles. He was a good shot and was the winner of several district medals. He was one of the party cent out in search of the Maoris who escaped from’ the hulk in Wellington harbour. He leaves a grown-up family of two daughters and three sons, one of the latter having served with distinction in the recent South African War. Mr Bould was a native of Staffordshire, where he was born on the 7tli January, 1834.
