Gabriel, representatives of a Queensland syndicate interested in the Wallace-Lowther patent rapid totalisator, are on a visit to Wellington. For exhibition purposes they have erected one of their machines, which are worked by electricity. The machine has many advantages compared with those at present in use in this colony. One of its chief features is that “exchanges”—boxes for the sale of tickets —may be placed on any part of the course (thus doing away .with unnecessary crushing as at present), or in the grandstand for the coiivehience of lady investors. These “exchanges” would be a boon at some of thq> -yrtuter meetings in this country wfiep, :tfte weather is. particularly bad. The 1 contrivance is eo simple that the machine is put into working order by pressing a button sipii-

lar to an ordinary electric bell. It is claimed for the invention that it is the first totalisater in the world mechanically and electrically controlled. The machine besides registtring the sale of tickets also locks up all unsold tickets by the judge pressing a button in his box as soon as the horses have started. One of these patent totalisators, it is stated, could do the work of any club in this colony. For the convenience of clubs which have an intention of working their own machines, the patent will be on view for a few days at the premises of the Colonial Carrying Company. From New Zealand the representatives of the inventors, visit Hobart (at the request of the Tasmanian Turf Club), Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Kalgoorlie, and Coolgardie, before returning to Brisbane.

The Ma-nawatu Racing Club has adopted a programme for the Christmas meeting, allotting <£3200 over two days. It has been decided to affect improvements on the Awapuni course which will give almost straight runs in six and seven furlong races, only the home bend being left in.
