Thtt • Wellington Land Board met on Thursday. Present—Messrs J. Strauchon (Commissioner), J. Dawson, A. Reese, P. Stevens, and T. H. Robinson. Notification was received from the Under-Secretary of the re-appointment of Mr Reese to the Board. The Commissioner and Messrs Stevens and Dawson congratulated Mr Reese and the Board upon the former's re-appointment. APPLICATIONS. M. Gough attended regarding the allotment to him of section 18, Karewarewa Village Settlement. The former holder had left the district and did not require any portion of it. Applicant was willing to take the whole section.—Deferred for ranger's report. J. Sullivan attended, applying for part of section 40f, block 10, Hautapu.—Resolved to obtain report from Crown lianas ranger." J. Fitzpatrick attended with reference to his application for a biiilding site for section 9, block 7, Kaitieke. Deferred for further inquiries. M. H. Palmer's request to withdraw application for 300 acres in the Kaitieke block was approved. A report was received from the district surveyor on Messrs Inverarity's, Cuff's, and Sixtus' applications for lands in the Kaitieke block. —Applications approved on usual conditions. TITLES. Murphy, widow of the late selector. —Resolved to approve transfer, but Board has no power to waive transmission of estate, though the widow could remain in peaceful possession in the meantime. E Blanchard, aeked permission to transfer section 120, block 13, Belmont, to an eligible person. He could not continue to use and occupy section owing to slips on road.—Transfer to be recommended for approval of Minister for Lands.

W. A. Pulman applied to transfer section 17, block 13, Ohinewairua. to J. J. Matthews.—Approved provisionally. To be given effect to after first twelve months have expired. F. A. Poppe applied to transfer sections 27 and 29, block 4, Apiti, to Mrs M. Mouton.—Resolved to approve transfer of either section, but not of both, as Mrs Monton is not eligible to hold more than 320 acres in all. The representatives of W*. Kenny, deceased, applied to transfer section 70, Mangaramarama to M. N. Olson. James Bird applied to transfer section 71 to same transferee. The latter would want to snblet the sections if he obtained a position for which he was applying.— Transfers approved, a snb-lease, if applied for on reasonable terms, to be favonrabl.y considered. T. Hughes applied to transfer section 87, block 10, Kaitieke. to J. A. Riley.— Resolved to advise applicant that there was no power to grant the request, as no improvements had been effected, although the section had been held for two and a half years; neither had any rent Been paid for a year and a half past. A provisional consent would be given, to take full effect on completion of required improvements and payment of rental then due. A. Dauphin's application to transfer section 196, Raetihi, to Mary Ann Gibson was approved provided transferee is a single woman. M. Corrigan applied to transfer section 5, block 9, Kaitieke, to J. Sheehan. —Resolved to inform applicant that proposed transferee was not eligible to take

section over in addition to his other two sections. E. Fitton's application to transfer section 6, block 16, Ohinewairua, to Mrs E. L. Small, was approved subject to the latter making the necessary 320 acre declaration. It was' agreed to approve an application from John Bowiek to transfer section 13. block 6, Tiriraukawa, to James Floyd, subject to a statutory declaration being deposited showing that the required improvements have been made. A proposal was received from W. C. Handley to subdivide section 24. Tailiape Village Settlement, into about one rood sub-sections, and transfer them to an . eligible transferee. —Resolved to approve scheme generally on usual condi-1 fions. A plan of the proposed subdivisions of section 4, block 14. Ohinewairua. for subdivision and transfer in one acre lots, was received, and formally approved, subject to the necessary audits beingmade. 'F. H. Bunny, the proposed transferee of a small grazing run (section 273, block 8. Wainuioru), applied for the Board's assurance that a conversion to lease-in-perpetuity would be granted later on if the transfer was completed.—Resolved to inform applicant that he should put himself in a position to surrender the lease before applying to convert. GENERAL. Mrs C. McDonnell applied to be allowed to subdivide section 1 (part of subdivision sa), block 10, Karioi, and sub-let 81 acres to James Allen and the balance to S. S. Cox for six years and eleven months.— Approved subject to proper plans of vari-ous-parts to be dealt witJa being supplied. It was resolved to pay the sum of <£37 3s lid received for improvements on section 5, block 4, Puketoi,. to the Public Account in payment of back rental, etc., due to the Crown. r I lie Commissioner reported that the roads had been Properly taken through sections 7,8, 9, and 10, block 1. Mount Cerberus. Resolved that leases and license be amended accordingly. An application from 11. D. Jamieson for a splitting lease over 10 to 20 acres of Crown lands adjoining tlie Waimarino No. 6 native reserve waa declined, as the area in question embraced some of the best totara in the block. With reference to disposal of unsold sections in Tailiape township it was resolved to deal with them as follows: Section 7, block 3, to be held over as the Railway Department still wants the section; section 8. block 3, and sections 7 and 8, block 5, to be offered for sale at an early date; the question of dealing with the road reserve to be held over pro. tern.

Marshall Wrote proposing to give road access to some Crown lands near Heaton Park provided the Crown continued the load through the narrow strip of Crown lands.—Resolved to approve a 50-link road being laid off throiigii the Crowii land on condition Mr Marshall dedicates the road through his own section. A report was received from the Crown Lands ranger to the effect that a certain person had been running stock on the grassed area of the Awarua lb block.— Resolved that the person referred to be charged 9d per acre per month from July Ist last to September 15th next, namely <£2l 16s lOd, and also that he be given ©notice to remove his stock immediately after 15th prox. so as to give the grass a chance to recover before the sale. Permission was granted to G. T. Bryan to select sections 8, 10, and 11, Marshall Village, at <£3 5s per acre. It was decided on a report from the ranger to vest section 24, Mangawharariki Village in the Kiwitea County Council as a gravel reserve.

It was decided to cut up section 68, block 1, Mangaone, into three lots and balance of section into two more lots, the right of tramway through the various lots to be reserved for three year®. A request from Messrs Goodyer and King to lease about five acres of a clearing in block 12, Kaitieke was declined. Applications were also' declined from Mrs' E. White for lease of four sections in Langdale suburbs, and from J. H. Flux for lease of plantation reserve 125, Maungaraki settlement. F. H. Schormann asked for reclassification of section 3, block 9, Tararua.— Board has no power to grant the request. The tender of McWilliams for grazing rights over section 31, block 12, Maungakaretu, was accepted at 5s 6d per acre, on the usual a©d published conditions. With reference to the allotment of section 2, block 4, Puketoi. it was resolved to rescind a resolution of June 29th last and allot the section between Messrs A. J. Patchett and E. Jewitt in as equal portions as might be found possible for fencing purposes, on usual conditions, and provided they pay cost of survey of the subdivision line which is to run north and south of section 2. It was decided to refer the question of the disposal of unsold sections in the Makoura (Utewai) Village to the ranger for re-valuation, with a view of offering them for sale.

C. G. Engstrom applied to have a part of Mangatoro township (a temporary lease of which had been offered to him) allotted to him in terms of section 114, of the Land Act, 1892, as he could not pay .£9 12s per year for a temporary lease.— Resolved to obtain a report from the ranger after inquiry through the district. E. Barnett wanted the price of his section at Kaitieke reduced from 20s to 12s 6d per acre, but the Board had no power to grant the request. C. Connor wrote requesting that when the totara reserves at Mangonui and Tararua are cut up they might be offered weighted with the value of his fencing on the land. —Resolved to advise writer that such questions had to be dealt with in terms of the Fencing Acts; consequently the Board had no power to do as he requested. In connection with the matter of dealing with the above-mentioned lands, Mr Dawson submitted a number of resolutions passed at a meeting of settlers in the district relating to the areas, etc., into which they considered the sections should be cut. —Resolved to cut up the '

land, into about forty or fifty acre lots with a few one-acre lots, the corner section to be retained by the Crown. It was resolved to reduce the valuation of the improvements on the following, and re-offer at original price for selection, weighted with sums named for improvements: Section 1, Upper Makuri V illage Settlement, from <£l3 16s to <£7; section 22, block 13. Mangahao, from <£4o to <£2s; section 1, block 13, Tararua, from <£l47 10s to <£B3 15s; section 2, block 13, Tararua, from <£67 10s to £7 10s. The Board adjourned until 10 a.m. next day. Alpass applied for a temporary lease of section 58, block 10, Mangahao, until selection of bridge site.—The district road engineer requested that the reserve he held back from disposal for the present, as* a deviation of the road would shortly he made. —Resolved not to deal with the land in the meanwhile, and to decline Mr Alpass’s request. D. Beckett renewed his application for a lease of Crown lands adjoining his holding (section 11, block 10,Kaitawa). — Declined. W. A. Lay worth applied for part of the Tamaki block in blocks 8 and 12, Pohangina survey district, as he and several others would select land there.— Board unable at present to deal with the land. GENERAL. W. Craig, junr., wrote, asking whether his residence on section 2, block 14, Ngamatea, which had been in a “comfortable canvas camp” from August Ist, 1904, would be considered sufficient to enable residence to' count from that date. —Resolved that his camp does not appear to comply with the definition of “residence” in clause 3 of the Land Act, 1892. A report was received from the Crown Lands Ranger on the ragwort on sections 34 and 35, Rangiwahia township. —Resolved to allow Mr Hancox to- use the sections during the Board’s pleasure, without payment, but subject to three months’ notice, on condition that he fences it and keeps ragwort and other noxious weeds down; this permission to give no' right to cut or remove any natural tush growing on the land. Similar permission was granted on the same terms, to Mr McKinnon in respect of section 23, Rangiwahia township. On a report from the ranger upon improvements effected on section 6a, block 8, Wairoa, it was decided to accept them as sufficient compliance with the improvement conditions of the lease in terms of section 8 of the Land Act, 1895.

With reference to O'. Rawlings’ request to be allowed to lease about three acre’s of the road reserve near section 10, block 3, Tiriraukawa, it was resolved to obtain a report from the ranger as to the value of any timber growing on the' ground, and what rental should be charged. It was further decided to grant a year-to-year lease on the usual conditions at a rental of Is 6d per acre per annum, but without any compensation for improvements effected, which will be done at lessee’s own risk, and without any pledges being given that the reservation will be renewed, or if it is, that he would then get the land. It was decided, on the request of G. Maillard, to offer him a year-to-year lease of section 1, block 1, Pipiriki township, at a rental of 15s per annum, on the usual conditions, and that rubbish can still be deposited on the reserve. The Commissioner reported that the lessee of section 6, block 9, Momahaki. had failed to execute his. lease within the required time, and that his interest in the land and his deposit had thereby become forfeited, in terms of section 82 of the Land Act, 1892. TRANSFERS. Mrs M. McDonald applied to transfer section 11, block 2, Kairanga, to S. Sorensen. —Resolved to recommend th© application for approval. A report was received from the Crown Lands Ranger on the sawdust deposited by the sawmillers on sections 1,2, and 3, block 3, Potaka. —'Resolved to withhold the transfer until the sawdust is deposited to the satisfaction of the ranger. H. G. Muison applied to transfer section 6, block 2, Makotuku, to G. Berry.—Proposed transferee not being eligible, transfer disallowed. It was decidecf to approve provisionally the transfer by A. Taggart of section 6, block 4, Mount Cerberus, to C. Swan, to be completed when improvements are brought up to date. With reference to sections 3,4, and 5, block 5, Maungakaretu, it was resolved to approve the prices being raised from 30s to 32s 6d per acre.
