(By “Norma-”)

On Thursday evening the member® of tihe Amateur Players Club gave a grand, dramatic entertainment in All Saints Schoolroom, in aid of the Melanesian Mission. The play performed was W. S. Gilbert’s ‘Engaged,” which is as full Off witty sayings and amusing situations as any of the author’s famous comic operas. The caste was composed as follows —Cheviot Hill, Mr John Eashher; Belvawney, Mr Jtossell Parker; Mir 9ymperson, Mr Charles Allen ; Angus Maoalister, Mr John Allen; Major McGillicuddy, Mr S. Neill; Belinda Treherne, Miss Margaret Bale; Minmie Sym person, Mrs Patrick Marshall; Mrs Macfarlane, Miss Kathleen Ulrich: Maggie Macfarlane, Miss Violet Williams; Parker,. Miss Vera Chapman. All the performers acquitted themselves well, but special praise must be given to Miss M. Sale, Miss V. Williams, and Mr J. ESasther. The performers were greeted by a crowded and appreciative audience, who were kept in roars of laughter from the rising of the curtain, until the falling of the same. Golf has taken tremendous strides in 2>unedin during the last few months, not with the quality of the play, so much as with the number of players, and now, not to play golf is equivalent to being out of the fashion. Everyone must play golf, consequently other amusements such as afternoon teas, calling etc., are fast becoming things of the post, and anyone wishing to see their friends can safely trust to meeting them on the links. Even hockey is not played much now, and when it is, chiefly by very young girls, which is as it ought to be. Mrs J. M. Ritchie is giving a tea, and prizes for the winners of a tournament, at the golf links on Thursday afterrioon. Miss Fisher returned to Dunedin on Tuesday, after visiting friends in the North, ; for some months. , Mrs and Master Holdsworth returned by the Moana on Tuesday from their trip to Sydney amd the South Sea Islands, the latter is much improved in health.
