A NEW TREATMENT OF ABORTION IN COWS

A new method of treatment of abortion in cows by’ a simple and, it is claimed, efficacious process, has been successfully tried at the Government Experimental Station of Nebraska. Dr Peters, the Principal of the Station, offers the following as the modus operand! : A cake of ordinary compressed yeast is dissolved in a teacupful of water, and allowed to stand to ferment. To this ferment is added from a pint to a pint and a half of water, and this forms the wash. In cows which have aborted, the placenta should be removed immediately, or as soon as possible, and the entire vagina thoroughly irrigated with a 3 per cent, solution of permanganate of potash. Then the solution of yeast prepared as above described is injected into the vagina, and it has been found to have the tendency to stop the discharge better than any chemical which has so far been used. It also possesses the decided advantage of causing no irritation, such as often occurs on the use of carbolic acid and other disinfectants. This remedy has also been used to advantage at the Nebraska Experimental Station in the treatment of leucontoea in cows. The vagina is washed out with a solution of soap and water, and thq yeast solution is then injected. A very few treatments are generally sufficient to stop the discharge. The use of a solution of yeast is now being tried on cows that are called “perpetual bullers,” and cows that are seenringly sterile. The same treatment is used, viz., the vagina is washed out with soap and water, and then a solution of yeast is injected. The experiments in this last direction are not conclusive, they having been too recently tried; but, theoretically the treatment is in the right direction, as in a large number of these cows, which come in heat every twenty-one days, the secretions of the vagina are usually quite acid. In any case the treatment is inexpensive and harmless, and therefore might be tried on this class of cows and the results noted, / It may be remembered that the cows treated by the Nebraska Experimental Station were cleaned as above a week prior to their coming on heat.—“Pax.”
