The limit in the building of huge ocean liners has apparently not yet boon reached. Latest English files report that at the annual meeting of the shipbuilding firm of John Brown and Co., held at Sheffield recently, it was stated that the company had a vessel building for the Cunard Company which would be the largest vessel ever built in the world. It was 780 ft long, and would take about 30 months to build. This vessel was the one that was spoken about in the House of Commons some two years ago, and nearly all that tinn had been spent in making arrangements as to the cost of her, how she was to be built, and what sort of engines she was to have. This vessel also was to have turbine engines and four rows of propellers. It is interesting to compare the size of this enormous vessel with the largest vessels seen in New Zealand waters, the Athenio, Corinthfc, and lonic, each of which is 500 ft in length.

The British steamer Tancarville, 2500 tons, converted into an oil-hulk, has just been towed from Newcastle-on - Tyne to North Sumatra, a distance of 82(30 miles, by the London tug Oceana. The Tancarville left the Tyne for Portland in tow of the tug Columbia 13th April, arriving on the 16th. The Oceana there relieved the Columbia, and started 17th April on her long journey with the Tancarville in tow, arriving at Algiers on the 27th, a distance of 1500 miles; Port Said on Bth May, 1516 miles; Aden 17th May, distance 1410 miles; Colombo 2nd June, 2100 miles; and lanbrandan 10th June, 1212 miles. The actual steaming time was forty-five days The Oceana towed at the rate of 7 knots most of the way, and down the Red Sea 8 knots. This is believed to establish a towing record both for distance and time.

With reference to Lord Muskerry’s question in the House of Lords, asking whether it was a fact that the flamburgAmencan Steamship Line intended to start a service of steamers on the Nile, the company informs Reuter's correspondent that such is its intention. The company adds that it is astonished that such a question should have been .put in the House of Lords, inasmuch as the company is unaware that a monopoly is claimed for the British flag on the Nile. The North-German Lloyd has assigned the new steamers Fran ken, Schwaben, Hessen, Thurmgen. Westfalen, and Pommern to its new service to the Dutch Indies and Australia, via Suez Canal, which will be inaugurated next September. The Commissioners representing the United States and Canada have held an inquiry regarding a scheme which might seriously affect the River St. Lawrence as a commercial highway, a project having been brought forward to raise the water level in Lake Erie for the benefit of shipping there. This, it was maintained, would lower the depth of the river. The United States Chairman allayed the fears of Canadian shipowners, stating that nothing would be done which would interfere with the Dominion’s vested interests. Voluminous statements were presented to the Commissioners on the importance of Canada’s trade.

The cable steamer Cambria has started from Queenstown, Ireland, en route for Cape Canso, N.S., to take soundings from 190 miles west of Waterville. Kerry, across the Atlantic, for the purpose of selecting the route for the new cable of the Commercial Cable Company. Soundings will be taken at intervals of about 20 milee, and this work will oooupy about a month. Already the Cambria has successfully laid the Irish shore end of the cable for a distance of 190 miles seaward from Waterville and buoyed the end. Another cable steamer, the Oolonia, is to leave London with cable material and a staff of electricians direct for Cape Oanso. and from there will begin laying the cable eastward over the track that the Cambria will have charted until she makes the connection wuth the buoyed end off the coast of Ireland. The Cambria is a new vessel, 370 feet in length and 1016 net register, specially designed and fitted with all the latest improvements for cable laying and overhauling. She is owned by the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company. Limited, London. The Standard Oil Company’s office at New York had some notice of the curious disaster to their tank steamer Maverick in the receipt from her the first thing one morning of a DoForest “aerogram'’ that she would be at- Sandy Hook at noon, and had been struck at midnight two days previously bv a thunderbolt, which shattered tne mainmast. breaking 25ft off the top. and knocking part of the main rigging adrift; also that a waterspout had broken over the vessel, carrying away sails and awnings. The Maverick from Port Arthur, Tex., June 19. with a baxg3 in tow. and was about 110 milee south of Hatteras when the disaster occurred out of a clear sky. The waterspout. it is stated almost swAmped the ship within less than sixty seconds, and

the wireless apparatus was wrecked s® that word of Hie disastetr could not b® flashed until it was repaired. Among the cargo to go forward on tho White Star steamer Cufic, which is loading at South Brooklyn for Australia under charter to the United States and Australia Steamship Company (says the “New York Syren”), are some twenty locomotives for Sydney, besides much other machinery and manufactures. It was expected that the Cufic would get away from New York about July 22. She will take a cargo from Australia home to England via the Oape, and calling at Teneriffe for lumber, but whether she or other of the White Star ships will again come to this port for Australian trade is said to be doubtful. Following is a typical news item from Newport “News,” U.S.A.:—“The Brazilian cruiser Benjamin Constant, has been in Hampton Roads since last Thursday. The vessel has on board a large class of naval cadets, and wiS remain in American waters for several weeks to permit the cadets to observe American naval methods. Visits will be made to Annapolis, Yorktown, Philadelphia, and New York. The cadets are of Spanish descent, and are very dark. In one of the Norfolk restaurants a few evenings ago several of them were patrons of the place thought the Brarequested to leave the tables, as other zilians were negroes.”
