HOCKEY.

WELLINGTON DEFEATS WAIRARAPA. The Wellington representative hockey team journeyed to Carterton on Saturday to meet the representatives of Wairarapa on their native heath. Hockey has “caught on” splendidly in the great plain district, and each town boasts three or four clubs of both sexes, and. perhaps, for lack of other diversions, the public take an intelligent interest m the game that is not discoverable in Wellington. A portion of the crowd of spectators on Saturday consisted of young girls, evidently players themselves, wno “barracked” the teams with great spirit, giving quite a zest to what was a runaway victory —Wellington, 7 goals; WAirarapa, 1. The country players had no idea of combination, which completely settled their chances of gaining materially by the frequent praiseworthy efforts of individuals. They have vet to learn how to hit, and where to hit. and the visit of the Wellington team —though it was not perhaps, the best that could have been se-lected-will have a good effect in showing up their deficiencies. Wellington (yellow and black) was represented by the following players : Goalkeeper, Pearson; full-backs. Staples, and F. Ashbolt; halves, Campbell, Reid, and Weybourne; forwards. Organ, Putnam S. Hickson, G. Davis, and Smythe. Waifarana's representatives (black and

white) were : —Goalkeeper, Truscott; fullbacks, Fisher and Toy; halves, Donald, Phiipotts, and Ross; forwards, Bunny (2), Rue, Waitai, and Williams.
