Some interesting statistics showing the progress of the city of Wellington and the surrounding local districts during the past five years, and the increase of material prosperity, were quoted by the Premier in his speech on Friday night at the banquet at Ohariu. In the city of Wellington the population. increased from 44,787 on March 31st, 1899, to 54,500 on March 31st, 1904. The unimproved value of land has increased from £110,003 in 1898 to £211,413, and the value of improvements from £51,883 to £133,308. The total value in Karori borough has gone up by r £182,835. The total area of land, under cultivation in the Hutt county has increased from 164,500 acres in 1899 to 166,816 in 1904, an increase of 2316 acres. The area of land in sown grasses has increased by 2097 aores. There are 926 niore horses and 1814 more cattle in the county, whilst the number of sheep has decreased by 27,000. The capital value of land and improvements in the Hutt county has increased by £684,546. The increase in the Horolciwi I'iding amounts to £41,721, and in the Johnsonville town district to £30,387.
