ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) The Executive of the New Zealand Axemen's Association decided to uphold the protest lodged by J. A. Gootd (Tasmania) against Dave Pretty receiving the first prize in the handicap chop at New Plymouth, on the ground that Pretty changed logs with Blanc. Mr W. A. Oattero secured second place in the 220yds and also the 440yds flat races at the Wanganui sports, and was also first in the 440yds at Hawera sports. Mr Oattero has been advised that he has drawn the horse Leonatis in Tatterrs all's sweep on the Perth Cup. A six-roomed house was destroyed by fire early on Tuesday morning. The "burned-out family (Edwards) .had "bare time to escape in their night clothin&r. Mr Bryce, of the Bank of New Zealand, has removed to Cambridge, where it is hoped the change of climate will be beneficial to his health. It is reported that some Bltham residents, who sailed from New Plymouth to Gnehunga the other night, were relieved of considerable sums of money en route. The Rev. Mr McConnel has returned from hi« trip to the Old Country and is looking very well after his holiday.
