FIRE AT OAMARU.
MAN BURNED TO DEATH. OAMARU, January 7. A fatal fire occurred here at 3 o’clock this morning, resulting in the death of George Leslie, tobacconist. An outbreak occurred in Leslie’s shop, and spread to the adjoining premises of Fox (bootmaker), Miss Brown (art repository), and i.uiss Falconer (dressmaker;. Tlie upper portions of the shops were destroyed, and the stocks damaged by fire and water. The insurances are — Leslie’s stock and furniture, £250, in the New Zealand office, with an additional insurance, it is believed, of £IOO in the Victoria office; Fox’s stock, £6OO in the South British office; Brown’s stock. £350 in the National office. Falconer’s plant and stock were uninsured. The buildings, which were owned by J. Hill, were insured in the New Zealand office for £6OO. It is supposed that Leslie overturned a candle and set fire to the bedclothes. He was found lying on the floor, evidently «uflr>mt e d in endeavouring to reach tho door.
