gain for the liberals. LONDON, January 8. a The Stalybridge by-election resulted as follows: Mr J. F. Cheetham (Liberal) ... 4029 Mr Travers Cleg (Conservative)... 3078 Majority for Mr Cheetham ... 951 The result of this election is a substantial gain for the Liberal party. The successful candidate was defeated at the last election by Mr M. V\ liite Ridley
(Conservative) by 80 votes, the total number polled being 6562. On til’s occasion 7107 persons went to the pe 1 !, or an .increase of 545. The Liberals have turned their minority of 80 into a majority of 951, and analysis of the figures shows that the Liberal vote has gone up by 9SB votes, while the Conservative vote lias fallen away by 243.
