LEVIN.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The sports held by the Weraroa Cvciing and Sports Club on January 2nd were a great success. The day was fine, though threatening for rain in the afternoon, with a cold south-west wind blowing. A good number of spectators assembled on the grounds to witness the sports and were well pleased with the excellent programme and the promptness with which the different events were despatched. The president, Mr C. Williams, backed up by a willing committee, worked very hard. There wa« also o weight guessing competition for a sheep, and a bean guessing competition, for a box of tea. These were won by Mr W. Wakefield and Mr Middleton respectively. In the huixters’ competiton the jumping was rather poor, the officials being kept rather busy picking up the hurdles which wei*e continually knocked down by the horses. The Otaki Band was in attendance. The programme was as follows:—Novice Race, two miles —A. Mudgway, 1; Purcell, 2. Slow Bicycle Race, once round the course —T. D. Taylor, 1; F. Pacey, 2. Maiden Race, two miles —A. Mudgway, 1; D. Musgrove, 2. Novelty Race, once round the course —T. D. Taylor, 1; W. Mudgway, 2. Boys’ Bicycle Race, under 15. one mile —E. Pacey, 1; A. Pacejy, 2; Vincent, 3. Hunters' Competition—Martin Wimata, 1; P. Hakai*aia, 2. New Year’s Handicap, 1 2, and 3 miles—First two events won by 11. Spicer; the final, W. Mudgway 1, A. Mudgway 2. Spicer 3, resulting in Spicer getting first, W. Mudgway 2, aud A. Mudgway 3. Pony Jumping—Hauita, 1; McDonald, 2; Middleton, 3. Forced Handicap, li miles—W. Mudgway, 1; Booth, 2: Taylor, 3. Now that the holidays are over we are settling down into • the old humdrum routine of daily toil. As is to be expected. things are not very bri-sk with the tradespeople just at'present but will soon resume their normal condition. A new cycle depot has been established in Queen street by Messrs Jenkinson and Co. Messrs Perry and Graham are starting business shortly as auctioneers.
