ESSAY ON COWS.
(By J essie Davidson, aged 13, Tariki.)
I will now commence my essay on cows. There are many different kinds of cows, such as Jersey, Ayrshire, Polled, Shorthorn, Holstein, and the- little Kerry cattle. Out of these I think the Shorthorns are the best for milking. The best of cows give about three gallons a milking. They generally milk about nine or ten months. When they are dry they are turned out to graze or kept in a close paddock and fed on hay. A\ hen they calve in winter they are rather thin and they do not give much milk. Most of the thin cattle get bogged in the creeks, and then there is a job for someone t> pull them out. I think that cows are the most useful animals man can have. When alive she supplies him with milk and cream. When dead, though a very sad end to make, she gives him beef, hide, tallow and other things.
