OPUNAKE
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
The Church of England lost one of its most enthusiastic workers this week by the departure of Mr B. C. Raikes, who goes to Westport as a stipendiary lay reader.
There are on view in town several samples of turnips grown by Mr Pepperell. Two of them weigh 24lbs and 30lbs respectively. The Town Board is going to provide a heap of boulders on which the tramp element who apply for work will be asked to operate. . The attendance at the Fire Brigade concert, on Thursday last, did not come up to expectations. Miss Boyne’s orchestra played the opening selection. Songs were rendered by Miss Loudon, Messrs Badlam and Chambers, while recitations were given by Mrs Duffil and Mr Craig.. Mr Walter Hickman, an exOpunalce bandsman who won first honours in the euphonium solo at the Feilding contest, gave the test selection. A dance held after the concert was fairly attended.
The Rev. J. White was farewelled by his many friends on Friday evening when the Rahotu Hall was packed. Several speakers paid high tribute to Mr White’s work during the nine years he has been in the district, and Mr Hughson presented him with a Gladstone bag and a purse of sovereigns. Mr White leaves shortly for Kumara.
