UPPER HUTT

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Winter is with us at last, and during the past Aveek rain has fallen daily. The river has been bank high, and in some places lias Avashed over the road, but no damage has been done. On account of incessant rain on Empire Day, the Hutt Valley Trotting Club was obliged to postpone its meeting at Trentham Park till Saturday, when the day’s sport took place, though the wea-. ther was anything but pleasant. On Tuesday evening a social to Mr Wilford, M.H.R., and Mrs Wilford was given by the settlers in the district.; The new Toavii Hall Avas engaged for the occasion, and although the day and night were very wet. a large number of residents attended to welcome then invited guests. After the usual speeches. Sir Joseph Ward contributed a song, as did also Mrs H. Cudby and Messrs Wilford Williams, Lay and Connell. At 10 o’clock a visit was paid to the sup-per-room, and after Avar ds dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by King’s string band.
