HUTT VALLEY TROTTING CLUB. A meeting of the Hurt Valley Trotting. Club was held on Saturday. There was a good attendance of members. The arrangements made for carrying «ut the meeting on the 24th insit. were deemed satisfactory. Inquiries __ were made as to what stable accommodation was offered in the immediate district, and assurance was forthcoming that it •would meet the requirements of visits ing owners. This is a matter that - might be studied by clubs generally, as it is very desirable for owners to have their horse-boxes as close to the raoe-ia-ack as possible, especially in bad weather and on bad roads. It was decided to call tendei-s for the right of refreshment booth on the course, and also to notify that bookmakers found betting on the club’s ground's would be ejected and prosecuted. The club decided to use the American system of arni-band numbering as more convenient to owners. In referring to this system of numbering contestants, an incident of bygone days - was referred to At a meeting held at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, some yearn ago 1 , the owner of the dam of Elector "was allowed to drivie arojund the track, just by way of warming the mare up before the staat of the race. Of courtee, no one " cared to back Hattie S. with a load of from 14st to 16st up, thus she was left - severely alone on the totalisator. Just befoa-e tlie start of the race the champion horseman of Australasia was substituted, and the mare won. Now, with the arm-band system this would have been impossible, as the driver of this horse would have had to pa&s the clerk of scales with his number and colours .on, and could noifc change them, loader penalty of_ disqualification.
