s ——-— £ NOTES BYJ BTRIN6 m l ' Leon Caron, the musical d'rector of'Williamson Opera Compamy (r rtv in Wellington) has been in Australia for twenty-six years, and has held his present position since 1887. He came to Australia as a violinist with Lyster, and was afterwards the conductor of Lyster Italian operas.. M. Caron in 1870 was one of the three candidates selected for the “Grand Prix de Rome,” but unfortunately the Franco-Prussian war broke out, and like many others during the commune, M. Caron left for London. Soon afterwards he obtained an engagement with the “French opera at New Orleans, and "'later on joined in New York the famous orchestra of Theodore Thomas as fir?' violin. He is a thoroughly artistic a.. well as tactful musical director, and his popularity in Australia is great. His cantata “Victoria” gained the one-hundred guinea prize at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880, where it was performed by a chorus and orchestra of 1125 performers. Mr J. A.
