EKETAHUNA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) On Saturday, the 23rd inst., Bisho" Wallis in juketanuiia, and. was heartily welcomed. On the afternoon of his arrival he proceeded to Nireaha, where lie held service. On Sunday morning at 8 and 11 a.m. he held services in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Eketahuna. Those services were largely attended. In the afternoon he proceeded to Rongomai, and in the; evening to Alfredton. At. Eketahuna he confirmed about eighteen young people. On the night of the 23rd inst, we experienced a sharp shock of earthquake about 11 o’clock. Oui’ cricket club is about to bring its season to a close. The members have played many matches during the season, and on the whole they .have reason to be yery satisfied with their success. To finally close they intend to hold a smoke concert. Bishop Wallis unveiled a. beauitful stained glass window in. the babtistry in St. Cuthbert’s Church, Eketahuna, in memory of St. Cuthbert. His Loa*dship ""spoke with much feeling when he referred to the first Anglican clergyman who came to the district,, the Rev-/ John Walker. On Monday evening a, new school committee was elected. Matters appertaining to the working of the library seem to ue in a very satisfactory state. There is a cash balance

to credit, and the secretary is authorised to purchase more books. It was resolved to write to the County Council, asking that the annual grant bo increased. Mr J. Vile, M.H.R., who is well and favourably known in this district, paid us a visit one day this week. The children attending school were given an “examination holiday” last Thursday. Sir J oseph. Ward has wired to the chairman of our County Council, Mr F. C.. Turner, urging the taking of cauitary precautions, also the destruction of rats and mice on account of the outbreak of plague :i.n Auckland. - Last Friday was stock sale day. There was a good yarding of cattle and sheep. Prices ruled high compared with previous sales. The weather has been ail that could be desired for the past week.
