During the four montlis ending March 31st the dredge Whakarire lifted 99 loads, equal to 56,426 tons, or 37,617 oubio yards of spoil. On this computation the probable minimum work for twelve months, working on ground of a similar nature to that engaged upon at present, would be equal to 180,000 tons, or 120,000 cubic yards. The cost of working the dredge for the four months was £1766, which per annum works .out to, -say, £5300. Allowing -£175 for annual docking, -painting, survey fees, etc., and £2OOO for repairs renewals, etc. (say 5 per cent, on £40,000), the total estimated oost for the year should be about £7475. To this must bo added an insurance fund, £1200; depreciation (say 10 per cent, on £40,000), £4000; interest and sinking fund (say 5 par cent, on £40,000), £2OOO. The capital cost stood at March 31st as £41,745. By the direction of the Wharves and Accounts Committee the sum of £1745 has been written off in the bocks on 31st March, and the committee recommends that in future 15 per cent per annum be written off -for depreciation, and the cost of repairs and maintenance, estimated to oost 5 per cent, per annum, be added to the capital sum, leaving the net depreciation written down at, say, 10 per cent, per annum.
