WELLINGTON EDUCATION BOARD

A meeting of the Education Boar 4 was hold on Thursday. Mr F. Bradey was in the chair, and there were present: Messrs W. Allan, R. Lee, J. K ebb ell, E. Fiest, G. Robertson, W. H. Field and W. O. Buchanan. The statement of finance showed the credit acoount to bo £343 3s 9d, and the debtor account to be £3589 17s 4d, inducting £2BBI 12s 4d on the building account. The contract liabilities at April 28th amounted to £373 19s Bd. Tlie pay-sheet totalled- £5481 14s 3d. It was stated by (ho. chairman that the extra capitation for the school committees would be distributed shortly. The chairman also informed the members that the Board had been awarded, £650 for its property in Aitken street, and would probably receive the money next week. For land at the Hutt the Board would receive £525, and £SO had been paid on deposit. The balance would, also, bo paid next week. Speaking oif ‘ the land at the Hutt. taken for river protection works, the chairman expressed the opinion that the Board would not receive more than £3OO or £4OO for it, although the land had been valued at £650.

A deputation from tlie Karori school oommitteo urged the Board not to give effect to an application for a school at Northlands, and pointed out that the school at Karori had sufficient accommodation for the children of the whole district, and those from Northlands had not moire than two miles' to travel at the very furthest. Tlie Board decided to take no action until it lias ascertained Where the Government intends to erect its training school or normal school, ' Tbftt school, it is understood, will be erected in Northlands, and the Board will write to the Education Department for information. It was resolved to ask the Horowhenua County Council to lay down roads and pathways' round the Board’s Levin property, as per agreement. There are about seventeen sections, and by a previous resolution it liad been decided to lease them. At yesterday’s meeting, however, a good deal of dissatisfaction was expressed at the decision. Members thought the - land should be sold. Mr Leo gave notice of motion to have the land, sold, and the matter will be discussed at next meeting. A letter was received from the Government Claiming a sum of about £SOO, advanced some years ago for the .purpose of building a school at Parkvale. Inspector Fleming pointed out that a school liad been erected in tlie district, and called the Rongokaka ka school. Evidently the Government Department was fogged about the matter. The chairman was given power to reply to the department.

Applications far schools at Hadfield. Longbusfo and Maranui were deferred; the erection of a new school at Mangarama is to be proceeded with; a report on a request for a new school at Nireniha was ordered to be sent to the Education Department; a request that a quarter of an acre of land adjoining the Eketahuna .school should be purchased was refused because the/ro were no . funds available. Tenders for a new cookery class-room at Mast orton were- too high, and the Board .suggested that the plans might bo modified to allow of them being carried out with the money available. Minor repairs to a large number of sohools were agreed to be done.

Miss Howden was appointed to the. Clyde quay teaching staff. Arrangements for gymnasium practice and instruction for Masterton were left in the hands of Mr. Fleming.
