SWIMMING.

(By “Natator.”) A writer to “The Bulletin” says: “When Miss Hill won the so-called ladies 50yds supremacy of Australasia, tlie heist wouldn’t compete before a crowd of men. Carnival (for ladies only) at Co-ogee Aquarium last week saw Miss Nea Brist-owe come out and easily squelch all opposition in 100yds championship of N.S-.W, Miss Hill among them.” To show to what extent swimming is followed in Sydney it is stated that ever a dozen different controlling bodies in that; city had fixtures on March 26, at which close on 1500 swimmers competed. Ax a meeting of the N.S.W.A.S-.A. held o-n March 29th a letter was received from the secretary of the- English A.S.A. regretting that- his association could not see its way clear to accept an invitation to send competitors for tho Australasian championships of 1904. In an interim report submitted by the committee which managed the 'Australasian ohanupionship meeting a complaint is made that the ' accommodation for spectators was too meagre. The aggregate attendance was 4000. The gross profit on the meetings was £Bl 2s lOd. Two records were passed at a. recent meeting of the N.S.W.A.S.A., viz., R. Oavill’s 58sec for 100yds in January last and the same swimmer’s 6miu. 31seo for 500yds, which was put up on the same date.

The 75yds distance for the Stewart Dawson trophy was set down for decision by the Thomdon Club on April 6. There was no- interest in the race as B. C. Frey berg had already 10 points in. This, allied to the boisterous weather, accounted for the fact that only one competitor started 1 . _ Tlie following give the value of prizes given for competition at carnivals in the city during the past season:—Swifts— Club £8 15s, interclub £3 16s 6d, total £l2 11s 6d; Wellington—Club £7,’ interchib £7 2s 6d; total £l4 2s 6d; Thorndon —Club £l4 17s, inter club £3 10s; total £lB 7s; Centre—£B 10s. All these were more or less successful. The carnival of the Swifts Club was undoubtedly carried out-in the most businesslike way of any. Before swimming caa

go ahead to any degree in this city a > large enclosed! bath will have to be pro- '■ vided, having accommodation for about

500 spectators. The swimming season is now over. As Soane members of city clubs may- be looking round for a. means, of celebrating the end of „ the season, the suggestion is hereby, made, that.it would be- a grand joke for the members of. each club to band together and make a descent upon th treasurer of • their respective clubs and pay all outstanding subscriptions and entrance fee®. The treasurers would be glad.
