Mr ,R. Cock lias consented to be nominated at the next Mayoral election for New Plymouth, in response to a generally expressed wish that lie should accept a second term of office.

Mr L. B. Spencer, the late Borough Engineer of New Plymouth, has started tho practioe of his profession in that town.

Early last Sundav a fire started at the Waitara Freezing Works, and was not suppressed except with considerable difficultly. The fire was confined to the lime and manure department. Besides the building, some machinery was damaged. The loss is estimated between £2060 and £3OOO, and is covered by insurance. The New Zealand Office hold a policy of £9OOO, and the London and Lancashire a similar amount on the whole of the buildings and plant, and parts of these amounts are reinsured in other offices.

The Star Football Club Sports at New Plymouth o:n Easter Monday-were well patronised, and the club will make about £SO over the fixture E. Gilmour won the Sheffield Handicap, and dead-heated with Cathro m the 220yd i. Morey won the Half-mile, and L. Ward the Mile by a yard from T. Roldt. Morey fell out of the latter event after going about a third of the distance, and Mr J. H. Hemp ton, tho referee, called on him for an explanation, which Mr Hompto-n did nob consider satisfactory, contrasting Morey’s two performances. Morey’s excuse was that he felt bad after the Halfmile. Eve-riss won the 440yds; G. Smith tho Maiden, Footballers’ Race, and Forced Handicap; and Griffiths tho Ho'.spita-l Race. Anderson won the Halfmile and Mile bicycle events; and A. J. Kibby the Quarter-mile Bicycle Race. At the Rahotu sports on the same day J. Pretty beat Casey in the champion chop. Cold and bolster o'. i;s weather set in on Wednesday night, and old Ejgmont to-' day had a regular winter coat on. It was a- sharp taste of winter weather. A feature at the New Plymouth Horticultural Society** autumn show to-day was a fine collection of apples and pears exhibited by Mr T. Horton, of Pahiatua. Weight-man and Son, of Awahuri, also had a nice collection of cut blooms, including some fine “ ’Manis” and cactus dahlias. April 2th.
