LAWN TENNIS

THE WELLINGTON EASTER TOURNAMENT. FIRST DAY’S PLAY. Certainly the most important outdoor event in Wellington during the Easter holidays is the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association’s championship and handicap tournament, which commenced at the Wellington College grounds on Saturday morning. The entries were more numerous than ever before, and the enthusiasm shown by the public present in large numbers was very marked. Through the heavy rain of the week previous, the turf of the college grounds had become quite sodden, but as the sun shone out brilliantly during the whole of Friday, and a northerly breeze blew on Saturday, the northern six of the dozen grass courts were playable at about 10.30 a.m., when a start was made. Even then, however, one or two of these courts were decidedly soft. It was not until after 1 p.m. that the other six courts became playable, but at 4 o’clock all were occupied. Even under these disadvantageous circumstances, over one hundred matches were played, a fact that redounds to the credit of the management, and more particularly to its chief executive officer, Air A. Howe and his lively lieutenants

The following are Saturday’s results, the name of the winning player or players being mentioned first in each instance and the figures in parentheses being tne handicap allowed: — Alen’s Championship Singles.—Best of three advantage sets.
