TARANAKI NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) NEW PLYMOUTH, April Ist

The promoters of the Christmas and New Year Carnival at New Plymouth are putting in solid graft even at this early date, and should fihev keep up their energy' the success of the carnival seems assured. A £2600 guarantee has been obtained in the town. The carnival will extend over some eight nays, and will include, horse racing, athletics, art and industrial exhibition, picnics, band contest, and other attractions. Some years ago a similar carnival was hold and proved in every respect a success. Mr R. L. Stanford, the S.M., was farewelled by the New Plymouth bar on Thursday, March 31st, and was also presen tod with an address. During his occupancy of the bench here Mr Stanford has nroved himself an impartial administrator; of the, law. Mr T'. Hutchison, his successor here, will take up his duties after the Blaster holidays. Business generally m. most of the towns. in Taranaki is reported to be slack, but I think this is more due to tho fact that competition lias been overdone, and not that there is any falling" away in the purchasing powers of the consumers. During the last few years there lias been, quite an inrush of business people into the Taranaki province, and their competition with the older business places has caused the trade to be more cut up, and hence the volume of trade done ffv 1 the old established places lias been, affected. In almost every town in Taranaki there are too many persons in business compared to Die population for whom they cater. Mr G. Fair, the petroleum expert, is getting everything in readiness to start boring operations as soon as possible. He will probably put down his first bore in the Bell block district. Mr W. Penn, the editor of the “Taranaki Herald” and the “Budget/’ has just made an overland trip from Auckland, coming through the Taranaki back blocks en route. _ He came through “on his own/’ He reports that the trip was a capital one, and except for some wet weather, was made under good atmospheric conditions. He struck several survey camps -during the route, and was hospitably entertained at each. Speaking of the country, he think® there is a good future before it, both from a, farming and industrial standiioint. Mr Felix McGuire, ex-M.H.R.. was in New Plymouth this other day, and was then on his way back to Auckland, where he has been doing some successful’ speculating according to report. In one deal I believe he made some £BOOO. Mr McGuire’© home is still in the Hawera district, but lately lie has spent a good deal of his time in the Auckland district. I understand: that a company to manufacture certain welldcnown medicinal preparations will shortly be started, but the works will be erected, in one of the centres if the company is floated, probably in Auckland. Mr R'. Cock null probably consent to be re-nommaitedi next month for a second term as Mayor, as a large number of ratepayers ar'e desirous that he should do so. Some members of the New Plymouth Borough Council are showing a lot of spleen against the late engineer l , Mr L. Spencer, and it is about'time they “rang off” and gave him a chance.
