lA WHARF LABOURER KILLED.

William Main, a wharf-labourer, thirty-two years of age, was injured on the Queen’s Wharf an Friday morning and died about 7 p.m. at the hospital. vßeoeased, while working by the steamer Mar area, got jammed between a big case and the side of the vessel. When examined by Drs Henry and Pollen, in one >of the Harbour Beard sheds, a few momenta later, it was found that the skull had been fractured and the loft arm broken. Main resided at No. 37, Adelaide road, with his wife and child.

DEATH.

DUNEDIN, January 29

The tug Plucky, with members of the Otago Harbour Board, the engineer and a number of visitors went down to the Heads this afternoon to inspect the Board’s works and witness a big blast. The blast consisted of 8001 bof gunpowder in a drive 40ft long, just opposite tihe jetty at the North Head. Most of the spectators were standing on the jetty, and . the blast blew out in that direction, sending showers of stones along the jetty. Mr F. A. Joseph, a reporter on tire “Otago Daily Times,” who was with the party, was hit on the head and killed instantaneously. Mr E. G. Allen M.H.R., was wounded on an ankle, but nob seriously. Mr Patrick Ryan, who wais standing at the extreme head of the jetty, was Struck with a stone, and had an arm broken.

A serious buggy accident happened on Bideford road, eleven miles from Masterton on Saturday night. Mr John Mcßae, owner of Rowlands station, was driving down hill with luis wife and three children when, it.is supposed, a dog startled the horses, which bolted, and the vehicle was thrown down a steep embankment. Mrs.Mcßae and one child were rendered unconscious, while Mr Mcßae had several ribs broken. A special train from VVellington to-day brought Dr Martin to attend the sufferers'.
