HAWERA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Given the glorious weather now prevailing, our exhibition should-attract a great crowd. The building is- 4®te an imposing structure. Frontiffgfio(High street, it runs to the back of thdjpuhlic baths,’ from there turning towards dhe Police Station in Princes streets i-This forms a commodious and interesting interior. ...-a

Already application has been made for £SOO worth of floor space, and surely this points to success. The baths being so near will provide water carnivals, not only by day, but by night, when artificial light wild fee used- The baths have been enlarged to the extent of admitting 1500 people. Quite a gloom was .oast over the town at the news of Mr A. A, Fantliams demise. . . . p. VI On Wednesday a shocking fatality occurred "at Mr Gill-Garcy s dam, wliei o Charles a’Court aged 16 years, was downed. He seemed, to have had a seizure of some kind, and although within a yard of safety, was unable too reach it.i Gi-eat eympathy is felt for his perents in their sad bereavement.

Tho Hawera Band is extremely busy, and we all hope to hear they have wen more than.one prize at the coming contest.. They deserve recognition for all their hal'd work." r •

Camping parties have been particularly favoured this season. The beach presents a very busy appearance at the week’s end.

Tennis has its share of enthusiasts. The bowling green is quite abe nty spot. Bowlers say the green is excel le ;t and I am sure it looks very pretty, with its gay border of flowers and the coloured “blazers” of the players. The hospital has had improvements made to it—a new ward and a muchneeded nurses’ home. Hawera is justly proud of its hospital an,d staff. I hope .everyone knows that we have water and drainage schemes in operation. The streets are .very much cut up just now and the dust is rather unpleasant, but with an excellent water-cart, we have a fairly comfortable existence. The Electric Light Company is very busy erecting its plant. It will be a great convenience in many ways, b”t the gas stove will be in numbers of households quite indispensable. Fruit is plentiful this year, probably due to the absence of equinoctial gales. These blizzards make Haw era. cl 1 mat© very trying'. Newcomers think it dreadful, but beoome acclimatised in » wonderfully short time.

I hope in my next letter to give you an account of the festivities during exhibition week.

January 29th.
