Though the figures prepared by Mr J. E. Page, City • Treasurer, showing the main items of the receipts and expenditure of the "Wellington Corporation for the year ending March 31st do not set out the detailed items as in the ordinary bal-ance-sheet of the City Council, they are nevertheless sufficientlv explicit to enable an approximate comparison to bo .made between the results for this year and those of the year which ended on March 31st, 1902. This comparison —though it must be only an approximate one pending the appearance of the detailed balance-sheet —shows that there have been satisfactory increases in the revenue of the Council under the principal headings. The increase in rates, so far as can be gathered, amounts to nearly £SOOO, whilst rents show an increase of over £ISOO. The receipts from the water sold to the public are better about £SOO, and there has likewise been an increased revenue from the water sold to the Government and the Harbour Board. The increase in the receipts from tramway fares is a notable item, as showing the steady advancement of Wellington and the improvement .in the conditions of settlement in the suburbs. In .the year which ended on March 31st, 1902. the revenue from this source amounted to £25,454 16s, but for the year just closed the amount is £26.690 5s 4d. or an increase of £1235 9s 4d for this year’s working of the tramways. Speaking .at Mr Gil ruth’s lecture at Hastings last week, Mr Francis Siiaw, ;secretary of'the National Dairy Association, said (according to the “Hawke’s •Bay Herald”) .that makers of dairy pro‘duce Would have to be prepared to accept lower prices :in the near future. If they were economical in their methods, this would not necessarily mean that •they would get smaller profits.
